Description

The tan holds the fire of the community. Thirteen-year-old Kip's always felt a bit of an outsider, but he knows he has what it takes to become the next tan. He just needs to persuade his Buru Tovo that he's ready for the next step of his apprenticeship. And then take it--but that's easy, right? A novelette of approximately 11,000 words.

someone who's more than he seems. Heh, the bit where he references a Lay and the other reacts... I'm being very obscure - it's a short piece, and there's not much to say that wouldn't be a spoiler. And I can see the patterns that caused him so much trouble in Hands forming.

Kip's life outside his house in Tahivoa, the barber shop and the house of Saya Dorn and what seems like rather of lot of young impatient earnestness from Kip for such a short story.

I’m finally beginning to understand that the reason I love these little books about the lays of the hearth fire so much is that they center ritual — they honor the importance that ritual can play in showing us where we are the world. In this little story, Kip takes some of his first independent

steps to prove himself to his teacher. Lovely.
