Three good stories - not excellent, but solidly good. The first, Fiona, has a silly aspect - Fiona is a chimp in love with Willie, who is the deus ex machina (although it's set up quite well - reasonable within the setting) to save Modesty and Willie both. Wu Smith and drugs and links back to

Network days. Nice. The second story, Walkabout, is even more fun - more links back to earlier days, with Jocko playing a major part. That one the villains are Mafia, and the setting is Australia; Modesty gets to go walkabout, and so do the villains. And the third one, the title story, is an attempt at a psycho attack on Modesty - which fails in several directions. Admittedly Willie saves the day, and he only knows where to be because of a hint - but Modesty has already got herself free, including of the mask, before he shows up. The villains were seriously outclassed here, and the end was poetic justice. Nice.

Another trio of fine "Modesty Blaise" strips in the excellent Titan Books reprint series. First up is "Fiona", an otherwise standard caper with Wu Smith returning as the urbane villain, given flavor and resonance by the presence of Fiona, a chimpanzee with the circus that Willie Garvin is

part-owner of. Fiona has an inter-species crush on Willie, who mostly sees her as a nuisance until the climax, when her love leads to a heartbreaking sacrifice. Second is "Walkabout", an adventure set in Australia where Modesty has gone walkabout in the bush with some aborigine friends. Third is "The Girl in the Iron Mask", a grueling tale of revenge in which the elderly and sadistic Bone twins have had Modesty kidnapped and doped up, lowered into a pit and her head encased in an iron mask, with the purpose of driving her mad before killing her. I can't think of another story which shows so graphically Modesty's diamond-hard resolve to survive and prevail over whatever odds beset her.
