I've been reading Nancy Mehl's Mennonite romantic suspense novels for years. She wrote three romantic suspense series centered around the Mennonite communities and I've read every last one. Well, with this novel she takes a different path. No Mennonite in site in her Defenders of Justice series. I
Show More
started this book and I could not put it down. This book is very similar the the writings of Lynette Eason or Robin Carroll. The characters are well-developed and the plots moves quickly. You think the characters are out of danger but don't breathe. Don't take your eyes off the page because they are very quickly in danger again. You will not regret reading this suspense driven book! You will probably stay up late reading. I'm already looking forward to reading Dark Deception which will be released sometime in May 2017.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bethany House for providing me an e-copy of this book to review. This book is due to be released November 1, 2017.

This story reads like the headlines, something we have been reading about and watching almost on a daily basis, and ironically it takes place around St. Louis, MO. Once that cover is turned on this book, you won’t be happy until the last page is turned.
Mercy Brennan is a U.S. Marshall and along
Show More
with her former boyfriend Mark, and her best friend are sent on a mission to help a witness protection having problems, or so they are told.
If you enjoy a book with non-stop action, you will not be disappointed here, and my only hope throughout were that the characters I cared about would survive, and how any do is a mystery.
I have read a lot of Nancy Mehl’s books, and this one is a big change from all of the previous ones, but she sure got my attention fast and kept it throughout.
I received this book through Net Galley and Bethany House Publishers, and was not required to give a positive review.

The story opens with an intense raid on a known drug dealer . My heart raced as I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. The author explodes with action and takes readers on a journey that will send shivers down your spine. I could feel the tension in the van as the team prepares for their dangerous
Show More
mission. There was no noise, only the smell of determination among the group.

Mercy is with the Marshall's office and is on high alert as the raid starts. She is tough as nails and is ready to defend herself against criminals. Mercy has some underlying issues with her father Nick . What did her father do to make her so bitter towards him? Will she ever be able to forgive him? I really liked the authors description of Mercy's father. I could picture his good looks and his desire to make amends to his daughter. What distracts him as they are eating lunch together one day?

The book continues with surprises and twists that kept me glued to the story. When a tragedy hits close to home for Mercy will she be able to hold it together? Her father was on the gang task force and the author does an excellent job of instilling how dangerous his work was. Did Nick know something that could place Mercy in danger? The gangs depicted in the story is well written with accurate detail and gives readers a sense of how powerful they can be.

The turmoil Mercy has with believing in God was such a great peek into her past. She has always struggled with her faith coming from a not so great childhood. As she is sent on a mission by her boss to check on someone , she is accompanied by her best friend Tally and her ex boyfriend Mark. The story continues with suspense and action that will leave readers wanting more. The author has written a book that reminds me of the intense tv shows that keep your heart racing wondering what will happen next. I was so fixed on reading the book, I blocked out the world around me. The plot is brilliant and shows how exceptional a writer the author is. The author took me right into the action with twists that shocked me with undercover cops, and gangs ready to do anything to get what they want. What damaging evidence does the cartel think Mercy was given by her dad? The suspects are piling up as Mercy is not sure who to trust. Get ready for a story that will keep you guessing with a powerful and shocking ending. The author is at the top of her game in this thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion and I was not compensated for it.

A great mystery full of intrigue and suspense by Nancy Mehl. Mercy Brennan has found herself the target of a powerful gang and her boss tasks her ex Mark St Laurent to keep her safe until it all has been taken care of. They find themselves stranded and at risk when a storm hits leaving them to take
Show More
care of business by them selves.
This book was a real page turner and I liked the chemistry between Mercy and Mark. I liked how I was right with some of my guesses and how I was pleasantly surprised with others. This is a great start to a new series and I look forward to more.

This is the first book in the defenders of justice series. Great start to this new series. U.S. Marshal Mercy Brennan is recovering from being shot and doesn't know that her father who has just returned to her life has put her in jeopardy. Her boss gets her ex boyfriend to help guard her and keep
Show More
her safe. There is some romance and a lot of suspense in this story. Will any of them survive or will the mole take them all down? I received this book from Bethany House for a fair and honest opinion.

Previous books by Nancy Mehl have focused on Mennonite or Amish communities interacting amongst those in secular communities and often laced with a strong element of suspense. In Fatal Frost Mehl steps firmily into the suspense genre aligning her characters in the U.S.Marshal camp and with the
Show More
world of protection, gang-bashers, and drug cartels.

I say this is a good fit for Mehl's talents as she takes the reader into the corruption that drugs, murder, and ill-gained money place characters. As the title indicates, the death defying chill of a severe winter storm and the deadly pursuit of evil men takes the reader into the mind, actions, and horrors of a spine chilling suspense read. Frosty indeed!

Character development is excellent and reveals weaknesses and strengths of each of the major players. Corruption in high places as well as low-life gang members run a strong thread of fearful encounters throughout the book. There is, however, a promise of hope as characters share their Christian faith.

As the first book in a series of Defenders of Justice, Fatal Frost has given me a sure-fire appetite for additional "defenders of justice" stories. Thanks Nancy Mehl for a good, Christian read.

Book Summary: Mehl Ramps Up the Suspense in This Brand-New U.S. Marshals Series- Mercy Brennan followed in her father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, but she has no interest in any other connection to him. A U.S. Marshal in St. Louis, Missouri, she's assigned to a
Show More
joint task force with the St. Louis PD that puts her back into contact with her father and in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang. When the gang has reason to believe Mercy has possession of some highly sensitive and incriminating information, her boss assigns Mark St. Laurent--a Deputy U.S. Marshal and Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until they can guarantee her safety. Initially unaware of the danger she's in and uncomfortable working with Mark, Mercy's frustration escalates when she discovers the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark. It isn't until a freak ice storm hits, stranding them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office, that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy closing in to put their lives at imminent risk. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

Review: I really enjoyed this book. The twists and turns were fun. I also liked Mark the most. It was a well written book with a good struggle about faith. Mercy had a lot going on. She was someone who was struggling. Despite this she was empathetic at times, although she had a lot of baggage. The story was realistic in the fact that drug trafficking seems to be overwhelming. They way the ending went it was tense and things seemed to go well than the twists and turns began. Definitely a series to look forward to.

Title: Fatal Frost (Defenders of Justice #1)
Author: Nancy Mehl
Pages: 304
Year: 2016
Publisher: Bethany
My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.
In her newest series, Defenders of Justice, readers are introduced to a U. S. Marshal character named Mercy Brennan. Mercy’s coworkers give her a nickname that implies

how well guarded Mercy keeps her heart and life. As readers progress through the book, it is revealed why Mercy protects herself from what she believes will end up hurting or breaking her heart. Mercy has few friends from within the service and from other agencies, but with danger rapidly closing in on her life Mercy may have to face her past head on!
In a tale of danger, suspense and unending battles, the flavor of a great suspenseful tale is revealed. The author does more than simply write a good book; she draws her audience into the adventure of the story and keeps them engaged as the plot unfolds. At times, when I least expected, Nancy Mehl would bring a sudden change into the tale that would ramp up my heartbeat!
Nancy Mehl has written many books in her career and I have enjoyed reading her novels. Now, in her Defenders series, I was even more engrossed in the plot, the lives of her characters and the suspense that didn’t let up till the very end. Personally, I cannot wait until the next story of the series comes out so I can see where Mercy is as well as some of the supporting cast. Keep up the great storytelling Nancy!

Nancy Mehl's name has come to mean two things to me: heart-in-throat suspense and a feeling of "this is so believable!" Ms. Mehl's latest novel, Fatal Frost, had me off balance and fighting for self control the whole book through.(It was so very hard not to peak ahead for the clues I couldn't quite

Mercy, a US Marshall, her former boyfriend, Mark, another US Marshall, and her best friend, Tally, are hiding from the cartel. Problem is, there is a mole in the home office. Can they stay alive long enough to escape the clutches of the cartel and root out the mole?

If you desire romantic suspense that impresses you with its realism and frantic pace, Nancy Mehl is an excellent choice!

This was a really good romantic mystery. I finished this book in a day because I simply couldn’t put it down. I was hooked from the first page and it never let up. The story is well written and the twists and turns keep you turning page after page. This isn’t a scary mystery, just very
Show More
suspenseful. It also has that hint of romance keeping it interesting and a little bit lighter at times.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries; you will not be disappointed in this one. Since it is only 294 pages it is also a quick book to read on a rainy day or on a plane ride. Since it isn’t a scary book, it is perfect for those of us too chicken to read the hardcore murder mysteries.

This book was very . . . interesting.

Mercy Brennan, the MC, captured my interest at the beginning. She was a very complex character. Mark St. Laurent, the other MC, fell a little short in my opinion. He was very sweet, but didn't have the same complexity that Mercy had, and I missed that. Overall,
Show More
the characters were interesting, but I never truly connected with them. I personally love character-driven stories, so this was a little disappointing for me in that regard.

The storyline was well-thought out, and very fast-paced. I read this in about 24 hours. There were some parts that were predictable, and others that weren't very realistic. For example, a character is left in sub-freezing temperatures in a blizzard without clothes on for several hours. But then, when he is finally rescued, he's right back to normal within minutes, seemingly. There would be far more severe repercussions than just needing to warm up for a few minutes. Also, a character is shot in the arm, and only applies a loose bandage, but then is able to function almost normally. He would have lost a large amount of blood and been incapacitated, but that is not shown here. Those are just two example of some of the things I found unrealistic. I found some of the details with the gangcartel rather disturbing, and a little violent for my tastes.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed in this. It was okay for a one-time read, but isn't necessarily something I'd recommend or read again.

CONTENT NOTE: Recommended for ages 16 for violence, mainly. There is a lot of gun play, a few characters are killed, severely wounded, or almost freeze to death. There's also details of rough family situations. The main story revolves around a drug cartel and gangs.

I don't know why I pick up Christian fiction. I'm not religious and I don't really enjoy it. Anyway, the mystery was alright in this one. Fairly predictable. Mercy was an okay character. The romance was lame. Likely won't continue with the series.
