This anthology of poems starts with Native American cradle songs and some early classics, moves on to the favorites by well known poets such as Keats, Frost, and Langston Hughes. The book ends with some new poetry that would be appropriate for children now like Shel Silverstein and Gary Soto.

found this book to be a fairly comprehensive anthology that I think children will enjoy. I know that I really liked the Native American cradle songs and I have always adored Shel Silverstein. I recognized many of the poems in this book.

For this book, I would have students write their favorite poems on paper leaves that they can cut out and put on the classroom's poetry tree. They could decorate their leaves and color them also.

The Oxford Illustrated Book of American Children's Poems is a collection of children's poetry from the 19th and 20th century. The collection is edited by acclaimed children's author and poet Donald Hall. The collection begins with a Native American poem signed anonymous, and then features familiar

works such as A Visit from St. Nicholas, Mary's Lamb, and Little Orphan Annie. The collection includes works by recognizable poets such as Robert Frost, T. S. Eliot, and Emily Dickinson as well as many unrecognizable poets.

This is a beautiful collection of children's poetry. The poetry in this collection is very familiar and comforting and reminds me of being a child. The poetry in this collection is suitable for children of all ages. I think that many adults would find enjoyment reading this collection as well. There are illustrations to go along with many of the poems which add some extra enjoyment. Because this is a collection of poetry written by many different authors the illustrations that accompanied each poem were very unique from each other. I would highly recommend this book for children and their parents.

This book is filled with timeless children's poems that have developed over time, including some by very famous poets. It is appropriate for middle to upper elementary students, as it requires some deeper thinking. This book is great for showing children some classic and famous poems.

The selection of poems is reasonable, though not always coherent. ?The pictures are *wonderful.* ?áThere are no notes. ?áThe text is small, and the credits are in such fine print that I couldn't find them at first, squeezed in as they are after the index. ?áMany pics are not credited,

either. :(

A nice enough book for a library or classroom, but I can't recommend you buy it for a single family.

My favorite picture is for The Lazy Pussy" by Palmer Cox, but it's from Orlando the Marmalade Cat: A Seaside Holiday by Kathleen Hale.

My second favorite is A Forest Glade, Springtime, by Johannes Boesen.

My favorite poem might be Cardinal Ideograms by May Swenson:

"0
A mouth. ?áCan blow or breathe,
be funnel, or Hello.
...
6
0 unrolling,
tape of ambiguous length
on which is written the mystery
of everything curly...."

Or Song of the Rabbits Outside the Tavern by Elizabeth Coatsworth:

"... Suns they have inside a cave
And stars on each tall stem,
And the thought of fox or night owl
Seems never to trouble them....

... But they never dance as we dance,
They have not the speed nor the grace...
... We who dance hungry and wild
Under a winter's moon."

This makes me remember, and better appreciate, Nathaniel Benchley's?áFeldman Fieldmouse: A Fable. I was interested, and saddened, to learn that Rachel Field only lived 48 yrs, and Countee Cullen only 43...."
