Perhaps my favourite Donaldson poem, here she deploys her fluent command of rhyme ("greedier / encyclopaedia"), non-irritating hooks and effortless sense of metre in the service of a clever, exuberant romp through various literary genres. Nested stories celebrate the immersiveness of reading and

the vivacity of the text. And kids love it, too.

Axel Scheffler's art is perfect for Donaldson's writing and there are heaps of visual subtexts, referents and clues to keep you leafing back and forth.

In this book, each new book character is reading about the next which begins and ends with Charlie Cook. Charlie Cook’s favorite book is about a pirate who finds a book. The pirate is reading about Goldilocks. Goldilocks is reading about a Knight who tells jokes from his favorite book. The book

ends with a book about a boy named Charlie Cook and that is Alice’s favorite book.

Before you start reading, take a glance at the opening spread. You see a boy's bookshelf, with titles such as "Fairy Tales From a Forgotten Island" and "Joust Joking!".

You're about to read from each of these books. In order.

See, Charlie sat down to read his faaaaaavorite book, about a pirate. And
Show More
the pirate in his story starts reading a book about the three bears... who notice that Goldilocks stole their favorite storybook... in which a knight reads from his favorite joke book... and on it goes until it comes full circle with the ghost in the scary stories book settling down to read HER favorite book about a boy called Charlie.

Every time you see a new book the font changes, you can see the dog-earred pages, there are little appropriate in-jokes - it's really very well done. It's a great concept, I think, and it's fun and fast to read.

Charlie starts to read his favorite book, that leads to a book, inside of a book, about someone reading their favorite book.

This is a book about books that start with Charlie Cook in an armchair and eventually make its way back to Charlie Cook in the armchair. This is quite a good book to get children interested in more books because it lets you know what can be found in the world of books.

Summary:
charlie curls up in his cozy chair to read his favorite book, as he reads he discovers that the charters in his book also have a favorite book, and the charters in their book also have a favorite book, and so this continues with every story that charlie reads in the end of charlie's book
Show More
one of the charters reads her favorite book about a boy sitting in his cozy chair reading his favorite book. On the first page it illustrates the hidden pictures of all of the charters such as a lamp shade shaped like an alien ship and a picture frame with one on the charters from the book, that you don't notice until the end when the charters are reviled.

Personal reaction:
I thought this book was ok the ending was very dry, and it left me hanging because it didn't explain how the charters ended up in charlie's living room, was it his imagination or was it real? I am left puzzled at this. I had to use my creativity to give my self a satisfying end.

Classroom extension Ideas:
1. I could have the children come up with ideas to create a cozy reading space and get lots of fluffy pillows to sit on, and have them bring their favorite book to class. and maybe I can start a good behavior chart, and have them work for cozy reading time or pajama reading day, to help embrace fun reading, and enhance a love for reading

2.We could write our own version of Charlie cook's Favorite Book, and I could go around the class and have the kids take turns adding their own piece of our story about a story etc.

3.for a preschool class I can high light the words favorite and book to to build that positive association with reading. by spot lighting those words.it is fun for small children to interact with their reade

"Funny, playful and full of surprises, here is another masterpiece from the creators of 'the Gruffalo'.
There are pirates and ghosts, knights and dragons, crocodiles and aliens all waiting in its pages.
So curl up in a cosy chair and let 'Charlie Cook's Favorite Book' become your favorite, too."

This is one of those circular tales where Charlie reads about someone, who reads about someone else, who reads about someone else that keeps going until you swing back around to Charlie. I liked that magazines and books were included. Many of the choices made me smile.
