This retelling of "The Princess and the Pea" is well-paced, with good characterization and a few interesting twists on the original tale. Fans of fairy-tale retellings will welcome Zahler's newest work, and will look forward to what she has to offer in the future.

A retelling of The Princess and the Pea couched in the traditions of Norse Myths and fairy kings and changelings. There were some fun twists involved, too.

Local notes

12-year-old Lilia is a terrible servant. She daydreams, she breaks dishes, and her cooking is awful. When she is sold off to the mean-spirited miller and his family, she decides to flee with her best friend, Kai, and his sister, Karina. Together, they head north to find the family Lilia has never met. But danger awaits as their quest leads them through the mysterious and sinister Bitra Forest. When Kai falls under an enchantment cast by the Elf King's beautiful daughter, Lilia must find a jewel of ancient power to break the spell. The jewel is hidden in a castle overrun with princess hopefuls trying to pass a magical test involving a pea -- all to become the prince's new bride.
