I love Mo Willems. I really, really do.

And you know what? I love Elephant and Piggie. These books work on so many levels. First and foremost, they work well in their job, which is "easy reader". They ARE easy to read... but not too easy. And while the illustrations do illustrate the plot (and very

funnily, I might add), they don't give away the plot. Children have to actually read the words to know what the book says instead of guessing from the context of the pictures. And best of all, the books are SO funny and SO over the top that even the most reluctant reader has to ham it up when reading, they can't help it! So when reading, kids are avoiding that terrible, horrible drone-of-boredom so many of them cultivate.

These books also function well as read alouds because they're so funny. Try reading Dick and Jane aloud. You can't do it. (If you're going to buy reprints of Dick and Jane, do so, but don't read them to your kid. They don't work for that.)

And, really, they're funny for grown-ups too. Don't tell my nieces, but I buy these books for ME, even if I store them on THEIR bookcase!

So, this particular book, I am Going!. Everybody reading the title knows that Piggie is not really going away for good. Gerald will still have somebody to skip and play pingpong in a funny hat with. But Gerald reacts in an incredibly melodramatic fashion (we all saw THAT coming too) until he finds out: Piggie is GOING to have LUNCH. (Punchline: They eat together. "Just like yesterday!")

Best part? Has to be Gerald's forlorn pleas that Piggie should go "next month" or "next year", said while holding a Piggie-themed calendar.

A bit disappointing, as I expect genius every time I open a Mo Willems book nowadays. Piggie annouces to Gerald that she's leaving and he PANICS, before waiting to hear that the situation isn't dire...

A good story for illustrating the value of *not* jumping to conclusions.

the book look so cute, with the art draw how the Elephant cry and look wory and yes, the piggie too. is really cute. I love it! the book about two friends and the elephant keep worry that the piggie will go away not wanted to play with him. But turn out it's time for lunch and later they both

This is a perfect first book for a child to read outloud. It is a fun story about friends with simple words that repeat.

We quote this book all the time around my house after reading it. It has turned an everyday saying of 'I am going' into an introduction to hilarity. Gerald is so overly dramatic and emotional, he is fun to read and exaggerate. This is a great book for early readers, as well as experienced readers

A fun picture book with a beginning reader format (page-shape and more pages). Young children will delight in the antics of Gerald as he tries desperately to convince Piggie not to go. The simple illustrations, that are characteristic of Willem, add to the story's appeal.

Piggie says, "I Am Going" but Elephant is really upset that she is. He keeps asking, "WHY?!?" and Piggie eventually says it's because it's lunchtime. So, they end up having a picnic together. It's not as funny as the other books in my opinion. Good for early childhood.

Review from library copy.

Liked it. How I feel when I'm going back to work from my lunch break and my son's going "mama mama mama buh bye buh bye!"

What's not to love about the Elephant and Piggie readers? I like that they look more like a pure picture book, but "feel" (size, pages) like a reader. The speech bubble format, with colors that match the characters, is a nice touch. This story is so simple, but so engaging for young readers. My son

insists on reading every "why why why why why why" on the pages covered in that question. Willems always shows so much emotion in such simple drawings. There is also a great life lesson in this story. It would be fun to discuss what "jumping to conclusions" means and how sometime we get upset before we really know all the facts.

Gerald the Elephant and Piggie have a misunderstanding. Piggie has to go and Gerald begs and begs him not to go. It turns out Piggie only has to go eat lunch.

In this book friends Piggie and Gerald are having a good day until Piggie announces she is going. Gerald is upset, distraught, angry, sad until he realizes Piggie is just going to have lunch. Then they have it together making Gerald happy.

Yes, five stars - they resonate with me, make me think and laugh, and are a hit with everyone I share them with.

I love Gerald's custom calendar - every picture a different image of Piggie. Some might actually think it creepy, but I found it authentic & adorable.
