This beautifully poetic book is a really great way to enjoy learning about gardening. It will really get the kids (and parents) psyched for Fall! The only thing, is at the very end, there is a couple of line that could be interpreted as Pagan. If that's a problem though, it is something that could

be very easily glossed over.

Review: Pumpkin circles talks about the ins and outs of pumpkins and how they get to a garden. This book also shares how to take care of the pumpkin throughout its life cycle and then back to the beginning.

Personal Reaction: Its not a book I would enjoy reading. Although it would interest me

during halloween and Thanksgiving maybe to learn how to grow pumpkins at some point.

Extension: I would use this book during the Halloween and Thanksgiving time of year for students to see how pumpkins are made. Also, it can be used during the same period for kids to show their artsy side with carving designs in their pumpkin.

Students will need scaffolding in how and what is appropriate when using garden tools or how to treat living plants.

The development of a pumpkin seed into a plant, pumpkin, jack-o'-lantern, and, completing the circle, back to seed again, is the subject of this colorful book.

Summary:
This book is about how to grow a pumpkin and about the steps it takes to grow them. The book gives a series of steps to help you build your own pumpkin garden(if you wanted to) and all that happens in each step. This book shows pictures during each step to better understand what is going

on.

Reflection:
I really found this book rather interesting because I never knew how much work it took and how long the process was to create a pumpkin garden. The pictures really describe what is going on during that certain step in the process. This guy's back yard in the book looked really crowded and like a giant mess. Planting pumpkins and having a pumpkin garden may seem like a lot of work, but it would be really cool to grow your own pumpkins.

1. Bring in different seeds to show to the students
2. Take the kids on a field trip to a big pumpkin farm

Life cycle of a pumpkin, from seed to pumpkin

The beautiful bright pictures and unique placement of the wording make this book appealing to kids. The picture are of real nature and children. It gives an in depth look of how pumpkins are planted then how they grow. It also talks about what pumpkins need to grow big and plump. After showing how

pumpkins grow, the author shows what happens to the pumpkin after it starts to decay. The pumpkin starts off big and round and as time goes on it starts sinking in and shrinking in size. Eventually it will turn into muck and mix in with the dirt enabling new seeds to grow. A pumpkin circle starts off with pumpkin seeds, then pumpkins, then back to seeds again. The circle that never ends.
I personally like this book because its not only information but it is science as well. I also like that it includes pictured of real objects instead of drawings.

Classroom extension:
1. The students can visit a pumpkin patch
2. Place a pumpkin in a big glass jar and allow it to decay. The child can keep a journal about the progress and what is happening.

Beautiful pictures of the growth, use of a pumpkin for a jack-o-lantern, decomposition and return to the soil. Clever pictures of a child with her pumpkin. Information on "How to Grow Pumpkins".
