Part of Mercer Mayers' immensely popular series of picture-books featuring the "Little Critter" - this character, which always looks a bit like a shaggy guinea pig to me, debuted in 1975, in Just for You, and has now featured in over two hundred titles - Just Me and My Dad follows the Little

Critter as he and his father take to the woods for a night of camping. Narrated from the son's perspective, it details their many (mis)adventures, from setting up a tent to fishing in the nearby stream, concluding with the statement: "We slept in our tent all night long - just me and my dad."

Chosen as one of our June selections, over in The Picture-Book Club to which I belong, where our theme this month is "fathers," Just Me and My Dad is a sweet little father-son story, with a humorous disconnect between artwork and text. The Little Critter clearly imagines that he is in charge, and is leading his father, while the illustrations make it plain that Dad is quietly addressing all the problems that arise. I never really became a fan of this series, as a girl, although I was well aware of its existence, so I'm glad that The Picture-Book Club chose this one, as it gave me the opportunity to sample a representative storyline. Well worth checking out, especially if you are looking for children's stories featuring the father-son relationship!

This book is boy (beaver) who goes on a camping trip with his dad. He is so happy because it is just him and his dad. They find a camp and make a camp fire. they go fishing. They do everything that people do when they go camping and this little boy is so happy because it is just him and his dad.
the boy is enjoying doing big boy things with his dad.
I enjoyed this book because the it showed a little boy trying to be independent and do big boy things. He is gaining his independence.
We could have a group discussion on independence, talk about what people do on camping trips and talk about things we like to do with our father's on special days like Father's Day.

Not only do I love Mercer Mayer's Little Critter stories, but I have a special fondness for this one. My daughter had a book-and-tape of this title when she was 3 and 4 that she played endlessly. I LOVED the title song.

My students always loved to look for the hidden mouse or spider (or both) that

Mayer hid in every picture.

This is a book about a father and son who spend quality time together. They take a weekend to go camping. Even though they have some obstacles that they run into it is the time that they spend in the end that matters

This is an adorable book about father and son relationships. The trials and tribulations that parents and children have to go through. It is a great story for really young children. It's an easy read.

This is a book about a father and a son going on a camping trip together. They do several activites such as fishing, setting up a tent, cooking, starting a fire, telling ghosts stories etc that don't really go all that well. However, it is still a great trip because the father and son get to spend

time together. This would be a great book to read around fathers day. It would also be a book that would interest young boys in reading.

Just me and my dad is a tale of a father-and-son camping trip filled with Little Critter's mistakes and good intentions. In spite of difficulties, however, the happy father and son manage to put up their tent, catch fish for dinner, and sleep beneath the stars. In spite of minimal text, the story

is full and rich, with endearing illustrations from start to finish.
My son is a Daddy’s Boy so this book made me think of him. I had my husband read it to him and now my son wants to go on a camping trip. I think it will be lovely and fun, can’t wait to hear all the stories. In most stories the Dad is often left out so I loved that the author included the father/son connection.
This book would be great to read to kids in boy’s scout. Fathers are often very involved with their son’s camping trips and this would be a great story to read before going on a camping trip. It would give the kids an idea of what to expect on the trip and have them all excited to go.

Little Critter goes hiking with his father, entering the adventure with all the enthusiasm and clumsiness of a child. They fish, set up a tent, and tell scary stories in the dark. The story is told, as always, from little critter's perspective. His statements are either hilarious understatements,
Show More
such as simply saying that the first tent spot was already occupied while the picture shows a very angry animal chasing them away, or childish misrepresentations of the actual event, like saying that the story scared his dad but a hug made him feel better, when clearly the little critter was the scared one in need of a hug. I laughed when he said that he launched the boat a little too hard, and we see that it is half sunk in the lake. I also really liked that Mayer had a full two page spread to show the bear stealing their dinner. In this series, the pictures are as important as the words. A bonus with this book is that it features time spent with dad; although fathers are making a resurgence in picture books these days, the majority of children's literature used to show more mother relationships. I like presenting books that explore many family dynamics. Another great story for read alouds with my daughters.

Little Critter goes on a camping trip with Dad. With his usual cute misinterpretations, Little Critter tells the story, rounded out with a few explanatory pictures. They have a few mishaps, but a good time.

Lesson plan idea:
For Father's Day, read story- tell the students that it describes a time
Show More
Little Critter spent with his father that was very special. Have them write a story, draw a picture, etc. of a special time with Dad, a special thing they do with Dad, etc.

This cute story about this little creature and his dad that spend time together and go fishing.

This is a story about a boy and his dad going on a camping trip. The story is narrated by the boy and told from his perspective of the camping trip. The story portrays through illustration what really happens on the camping trip.

I really enjoyed the comedy in this book. The boy is telling the story
Show More
as if the camping trip was no big deal and very low key, when the pictures tell a very different story. The real excitement in this story takes place in the illustrations and must be considered carefully to get a good understanding of the actual events that took place on the camping trip. Having been on many camping trips with my family as a child, I know there are always lots of stories to tell and it’s the terribly funny things that go wrong that make the camping trip all the more memorable. For instance, the dog my sister and I thought was a wolf that stole our chicken we were preparing for dinner. Oh yes, good times.

1. This would be a great way to introduce the power of illustrations. Students could write a short story and use illustrations to tell the behind the scenes action.
2. This a great book for talking about family. This would be a good jumping off place for students to write about something they have done with someone in their family.

This is a cute childrens book and I enjoyed it! This book is a great book for young boys because it is about an adventure of a father and son gone camping. They go hiking, fishing, set up a tent, and tell stories to each other. This could also be read by a daughter who can relate to these things
Show More
that she may do with her own father. I also liked this book because I feel as if most childrens books forget to include the father in it. Many that I have read include the mother being there for the child, or helping her daughter or son, while you rarely ever see one where the father is the main guardian. I liked that this was different, and think that this can be a really great book for a father to read to his own child. Lastly, I loved the bright illustrations and that they were humorous at times as well. Whenever the son would make a mistake or do something wrong you could tell by the expression on his fathers face in the illustration. And no matter how many mistakes he made, his father still loved him! The main idea of this book was to show the father-son relationship, and the love between them or family.

When reading this book, it seems as though the main character is afraid of his dad for most of the reading. The little boy continuously tries to impress his father on the camping trip they take together. He wants everything to go according to plan and when it doesn't the little boy becomes upset. I
Show More
gained a more in depth perception of the book when I went back and viewed the expression on the father's face. I believe that the theme of this book is that parents, especially father's will love their children no matter what the circumstance. The boy had tried many times to impress his father, failing every single time. Looking back on the facial expressions of the father, you can tell he loves his son regardless of the failed impressions. I would recommend this book to a Pre-k class in order to help them gain a perspective on what love between father and child should be like.

I remember my children reading these books when they were young. I enjoyed revisiting this book without having a child to read it to.
