Sarah Anderson is best known for her Sarah’s Scribbles web comics, where a big-eyed, spiky-haired version of herself deals with introversion, anxiety, and the vagaries of modern life in a humorous, relatable way. Those strips are the exact sort of thing that people love to share on social media.

When I heard about her new book, Fangs, I was intrigued because it sounded so different from her oftentimes silly work in Sarah’s Scribbles.

However, it turns out that Fangs doesn’t go that far afield. I’d assumed that it was a longer story, but it’s actually a collection of another webcomic. Although the art style and main characters are very different from Sarah’s Scribbles, the strips in Fangs are still one-page slice-of-life jokes and observations.

The stars of the strips in Fangs are a couple: Elsie the vampire and Jimmy the werewolf. They meet, they do couple things, and sometimes there are jokes about vampires or werewolves. That’s it! There isn’t any kind of developing story or anything. Some of the strips are literally just a picture of them hanging out being a couple, drinking tea and reading.

I know there is a market for this sort of thing, of course. People love to write fan-fiction about their favorite characters falling in love and experiencing no trauma or strife whatsoever. This collection sort of feels like that concept distilled into comic form: what if a vampire and a werewolf dated, got really comfortable, loved each other, and there was absolutely no conflict or danger? Personally, I find that kind of boring.

Perhaps I would have been more forgiving of this collection if there was an overarching story, or if the individual strips were funnier. Instead, the best I can say about this book is that I like the art, and it was occasionally funny, maybe a quarter of the time. I think I read the whole thing in fifteen minutes, to be honest.

Fangs is one of those books where the more I thought about it, the less I liked it. I don’t think collecting these strips does them any favors. They just feel more insubstantial when you have them together in one place.

Full disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This post was originally published at Full of Words.

I'm so glad I discovered this author, and for extra fun Fangs is the perfect spooky read! This is a light, fun, supernatural take on dating. She's a vamp, and her beaux is a sexy, scruffy werewolf. Together they cuddle, go for walks, respect each other's unusual tastes, and navigate the ups and
Show More
downs of a new relationship. Adorable and uplifting. I really enjoy the art, too.

I've had this graphic novel on my 'to be purchased' list for awhile now. So, when I saw I could read an advanced copy, I was stoked! Thank you, NetGalley!

The drawings are cute and simplistic as is the story. It's humorous and heartfelt, the perfect combination. The only downfall, it felt too short
Show More
as it's pretty quick to read through.

This love story between a werewolf and a 300-year-old vampire is to die for...definitely recommend!

I was expecting a romantic graphic novel but am still happy with the collection of humorous gag strips -- that are also romantic, gory, and sexy -- about a vampire and werewolf dating. Fun stuff.

I love Sarah Andersen's werewolf/vampire comics, so I was very pleased to get to review this collection of them. They're funny and smart and the characters are really cute together. I love the little nods towards folklore and how weird it would be to exist as a vampire and werewolf, both
Show More
individually and together in the modern world. Also, I love the character designs. The goth vampire gf and grunge werewolf bf pairing really works.

Recommended for anyone who likes vampires and werewolves in fiction and especially for those who like to laugh at tropes.

Series Info/Source: This is a stand alone book that I borrowed from the library.

Story (5/5): This gives you a glimpse into the lives of Elsie and Jimmy. Elsie is a three hundred year old vampire who is looking for companionship and someone who will just let her be herself. Jimmy is a werewolf in a
Show More
similar position. These are just little one page comics that give a humorous glimpse into their relationship and day to day lives together. It’s cute, darkly humorous, and very well done. I liked it a lot and found myself laughing out loud many times. My husband and I then sat down and re-read it together and he enjoyed it too.

Characters (5/5): The two main characters are well done; Elsie is just your normal everyday 300 year old vampire...she loves blood, violence, dark rooms and Jimmy. Jimmy is your typical werewolf; he loves his raw meat, can’t resist chasing squirrels, loves to be scratched behind the ears, and adores Elsie. They are two irresistible characters with a bit of a darkly humorous streak to them. I loved them right away.

Setting (4/5): A lot of this takes place in the characters houses or out walking around their neighborhood. Nothing special but very well drawn and easy to follow.

Writing/Drawing Style (5/5): The drawing in here is very well done and typical of Andersen’s normal artwork, I do feel like this is a bit more refined than her “Sarah’s Scribbles” comic was. I adored the little glimpses into Elsie and Jimmy’s day to day life, which walks us through their rather unusual relationship. Andersen takes pretty much every typical vampire and werewolf trope and makes it a joke in here about it. I enjoyed all the references to popular paranormal beliefs and material. This was very very well done. The physical book itself is beautiful too, wrapped in blood red cloth with an embossed picture of Elsie on the front, it’s a pleasure to hold and read.

My Summary (5/5): Overall I loved this, it was so well done and so much fun. Very different from the “Sarah’s Scribbles” comic, this felt a lot more refined and was both a lot sweeter and a lot funnier. I would recommend it to those who enjoy laughing at humor involving paranormal creatures. Can’t wait to see what Andersen comes up with next, I love her drawing style and her off the wall sense of humor. I also loved the care that was put into the physical book design, it’s beautiful.

A collection of comics about the relationship between Ellie (a vampire) and Jimmy (a werewolf) from the artist behind Sarah's Scribbles.

Really sweet and cute collection of relationship comics with a ton of vampire and werewolf jokes mixed in. The art here is gorgeous and a very different style from

Andersen's scribbles comics. A super quick, feel-good read.

I would have liked it better if it was more of a graphic novel (story) than just different comics.

This was a cute, very quick, love story about a vampire and a werewolf.

I'm pretty new to graphic novels. This one felt a little ... juvenile, I suppose. I don't mean that I think kids should read it. Just that it isn't very deep, it certainly isn't sophisticated, and the story is not well fleshed
Show More
out. But saying all of that, I still enjoyed it immensely!

I do wish it had been in color though. I think that would have been really striking with the darkness of Elsie.

This is so freaking cute!

Quite a different style to the Sarah’s Scribbles comics but the humour is pretty close. Sweet and cute but a touch dark at times. The comic chronicles small moments in the relationship between a vampire and a werewolf playing on several horror and romance tropes. It’s a

very quick read but oh, so sweet and fun.

This is basically a slice-of-life graphic novel about the developing relationship between a werewolf (Jimmy) and a vampire (Elsie). He likes her goth looks, cuddling with her cold body when it's hot out, and the fact that she has zero issues with his ability to turn into a wolf. She likes that she
Show More
can talk about having killed people without making him flinch (although most of her blood comes from blood banks these days) and that he occasionally lets her bite his neck. They're both not human, so they "get" each other in ways a human partner might not, but they also each have to make some adjustments. For example, she can't wear silver unless she's sure it won't touch him, and he has to remember that she'll burst into flames in direct sunlight, so no opening the curtains in the morning without warning.

I think I first heard about this via Sarah Andersen's tweets of some of the individual comics. I noted it down as something I was interested in seeing more of and then forgot about it until my recent graphic novel binge.

The physical volume is really nice looking - red cover, black-edged pages. I love the artwork. It's very different from her style in "Sarah's Scribbles," more detailed and realistic. Elsie and Jimmy make a good-looking couple.

While it's nice to read through the volume and watch them progress from strangers who are into each other to a cute couple who've decided to live together, I feel like this series was probably best (for me) in the short bursts that Twitter gave me. Reading this all in one go left me with werewolf and vampire questions this wasn't designed to answer. Also, some jokes worked better for me than others. Jimmy displaying dog behavior like running to the door when Elsie mentioned going for a walk was just odd, for example. I did really enjoy the comic in which Jimmy talked to a Chihuahua, though.

Elsie is a three hundred year old vampire who meets Jimmy, a werewolf, at a bar. Fangs follows their relationship filled with cuteness and humor.

I don’t know how I went this long without reading this graphic novel, as I love Sarah Andersen.

Each page was its own scene and this is such an adorable
Show More
book filled with the cutesy, cheesy relationship of a vampire and a werewolf sprinkled in with humor of the stereotypes of the two.

The art was simple, but still amazing, like the rest of Andersen’s style. It made me giggle and smile seeing Elsie and Jimmy being together.

Definitely recommend this book, especially those who have read Andersen’s novels and comics before - you won’t be disappointed.

This is a short comic book about a vampire who finally meets and falls in love with her perfect match, who happens to be a werewolf. This book chronicles their everyday life together whether it's just watching tv or eating a meal.

This was super adorable. I love the idea of a vampire and a werewolf, makes me think of reading twilight and wanting her to choose the werewolf. Great illustration and storyline. I love the simplicity of the drawings and different scenes. I laughed, I giggled, I related to it and it was

heartwarming. Great short read. I can’t wait to see more.

Sarah Andersen’s Fangs tells the love story between a vampire and her werewolf boyfriend through a series of vignettes. Andersen draws upon the mythology of both creatures of the night, filtering it through her unique style and twenty-first-century life. For example, Elsie is a grown-up who
Show More
retains her love for goth/emo fashion while having developed a more sophisticated style. Jimmy, the werewolf, is a hipster and recalls the heckin’ doggo memes online in some of his behavior. The result is something unique in vampire fiction that’s cute and sweet, delivering just the right notes of cozy horror for those who enjoy the genre.
