After a massive earthquake, few people survive. Trapped in a cave that use to be an underpass, emergency paramedic Lauren Boyer doesn't see much hope for survival. But once she realizes she isn't alone, the instinct to fight to live and help others comes on strong. Garrett aids Lauren in her rescue

efforts. While she knows she can trust him and they work together well, she doesn't understand why he seems to also want to keep a distance from her.

When a gang of escaped convicts goes on the attack, Garrett is the sole protector of Lauren and the few other survivors they have found. It's a race to escape and find help before what few supplies they have left run out or before the escaped convicts get restless.

There is definitely a twist to this story that I can't elaborate on without giving away but it's a fun read. I give it a 7 on the steamy scale. (Although parts were a little weird. For instance, as an aftershock hits just after Lauren and Garrett met, he covers her with his body to protect her. I'm not sure I get her 'wow, yummy! this is my favorite position!' thoughts but who knows! Guess it could happen. ???) Suspense is good, it definitely kept my interest. I didn't feel like the plot was predictable. The convicts kept me guessing as to what they would do next. And the events unfolding around them felt realistic as far as the earthquake too. Makes you think...

Overall, pretty good read. I would definitely read more by this author.

Aftershock by Jill Sorenson
4 STARS

It's full of drama, action and scary. The reason its scary is it could happen anywhere anytime. Thier is also romance, heroes and bad guys. Lots of love scenes too.
When I had read the back of the book I wondered how thier could be so much when they were stuck under

the freeway after a earthquake. But thier is a big area that is blocked by the 8.5 earthquake interchange in CA.
Lauren Boyer is a emergency paramedic and her partner are on the freeway when the earthquake began parts of the freeway fell. Then a big aftershock came more freeway rose and crashed and her partner was killed.
Thier was alot of death, mangled cars, fires. Lauren hears a voice asking in anyone is alive. Garrett Wright is former Irag veteran. He helps Lauren grab first aid supplies and they look for other survivors.
One of the first they find is Penny a pregnant teenager trapped in the car. Her Aunt did not make it. Penny's baby is due in two weeks.
They find a RV with grandfather Donald Creswell and his grandaughter Cadence. He has some food and water.
Thier is a guy who is in a coma, a women who is badly hurt. They find other supplies in some cars. They find two guys in the back of a pickup drinking beer along with a 3 guy who is hurt.
They stack the dead bodies in a corner covering with a tarp. That night Lauren is asleep when someone attacks her and tries to rape her. Lauren makes enough sound that Garret hears her and is beating the guy up and another guy has a gun and threatens to shoot Lauren if Garret does not let him up.
Garrett feels guilty that Lauren got hurt. He feels he should have told her that they were prisoners that escaped prison van.
That makes two groups and the prisoners have a gun and are not afraid to use it. They can't get out and all the different cell phones they found don't have service.
Thier is a lot tension and short supplies are a big worry. I did not want to put down the book till I was finshed.
I was given this ebook to read in exchange for honest reviews from Netgalley.

First Thought When Finished: Do you know how occasionally as readers we run into stories (or characters) that we just can't connect with? That was me with these characters.

Story Talk: If

this book had not been a romantic suspense novel it probably would have rated higher in my mind. I felt the natural disaster and aftermath were done with brutal honesty and beautiful storytelling. The actions of a few survivors and their journey was horrific to read but very poignant. The only distracting part was the romance between Garrett and Lauren. The fact that I felt more drawn to the pregnant Latina teenager and the young white supremacist convict sub-story than the main couple says a lot. I just wasn't feeling the romance at all. The sex I bought but the romance not so much!

Character Talk: I am not sure who I was more disappointed in: Garrett or Lauren. Garrett has some secrets (that I won't give away)that he chooses not to divulge to Lauren before sleeping with her. He did make it clear that he wasn't available for a relationship though. Lauren was frustrating. She was mad at Garrett for making her stay away, mad at Garrett for getting involved, and then mad at Garrett for not telling her the whole truth. She was willing to sleep with a man that was involved with someone else and then was furious when she found out the truth. I think it was a no win situation that somehow lead to "I love you". It just did not feel organic at all.

Writing Talk: I normally don't do this section but I think it is important to point out how well I think Jill Sorenson writes. I might not have loved the characters but the story flowed smoothly. The parts about the natural disaster and aftermath showed she did her homework. Also, the fact that she was willing to tell a story that might not sit well with people shows gumption. I will be continuing this series because I did feel drawn to all the side characters. The fact that I finished the book after having such a disconnect from the main characters is a huge testament to Jill's writing.

Final Thought: This is a book that I know others have loved so please give it a shot!

I really liked this one; however, I have to say that the cover model--who I assume is supposed to be Garrett?--doesn't fit my mental image of him. At. All. Although cover guy does have lovely abs, he's not nearly big enough to be the Garrett we read descriptions of in the book. But I

digress....

Jill Sorenson did a fantastic job of world-building on this one. The post-earthquake "cave" that Lauren, Garrett, and company find themselves in is very gritty, real, and terrifying. She had me believing in it 100%. I shared the horror of being trapped down there and almost believed I was right beside Lauren as she tried to save the injured and with Garrett as he tried to climb to safety. I was pretty sure I knew what Garrett's "secret" was fairly early on, and ended up being (mostly) okay with it. I could see how those particular circumstances might have occurred, and the eventual solution to his problem--though of course convenient--was still believable. The only real sticky part for me was how fast the two main characters came to the "I love you" conclusion; then again, extreme circumstances and all that. I was more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt since I really did want them to be together. All in all, this was a pulse-pounding, action-packed read. The teaser at the end already has me looking forward to her next book, too!

are kept captivated until the end. This all starts out with a horrible earthquake at hits San Diego and a paramedic Lauren Boyer is trapped under a collapsed freeway. In her search she comes across a former marine, Garrett Wright and together they form a camp with a few other survivors. Soon they become confronted by three escaped, with weapons and dangerous convicts who threaten their lives. How will this come out? Will there be something going on between Garret and Lauren romantically? The secondary characters between Owen and Penny were interesting. I found for the most part of the novel the characters were well developed and colorful. This is where I say you must pick up "Aftershock" to see how this author is able to get this delivered to the reader. Be ready for a romance with 'no hearts and flowers, hard core with convicts and a survival and death and yes, there will be hope and love within all of this despair.'

If you are in for a good read with pulse-pounding action packed you have come to the right place for "Aftershock" will give it to you and I would recommend this read.

Wow, this book blew me away. From start to finish, I was always engrossed and finished it as fast as I could. I guessed the twist before it was revealed but it was such a biggie it didn’t matter as I had no idea how it would be resolved. This was a very stark look at the human desire to live and
Show More
how it brings out both the best and worst of people.

Lauren was possibly my favourite character in this book. I like heroines who take charge of what they want and are completely unapologetic about their actions. As soon as she got out of that ambulance, strapped on her big-girl panties and started being one of the most important parts of the survival mission, I knew I would like this book. I always say, liking the hero should be a given in romance but the heroine is a big added bonus!! She impressed me the most with the way she dealt with the most perilous of the immediate dangers they faced in the form of the escaped prisoners that were with them. Although one of them tried to rape her, she still didn’t give him the pleasure of knowing just how much he intimidated her. She avoided him, recognised him as a danger, but never did I see her sit down and cower (which I would have been doing in her situation). I loved how she used her training to keep calm under the immense pressure and just did what she had to.

Garrett was a good hero but I recognised that he had some secrets as soon as we saw him. An ex-army vet, he was the muscle of the group and the man with the tactical no-how to get them out of the situation if it was at all possible. He was the strongest of the group and did the majority of the “dirty-work”. He was the one who took it upon himself to stand guard and make sure everyone was safe by being the physical defense to the threat of the criminals. I liked that everyone had a role within the group and, of course, the fact that Garrett was represented as the strong one made him that more appealing. It was a very odd situation for me as a reader when we found out the “truth” about him that is mentioned in the blurb. It didn’t make me think any of less of him, I judged him solely on his actions in the book, but then it made me question what would happen if the same revelation happened in real life...I don’t know if I would be as forgiving and that made me think a little less of myself.

The romance between them was yummy. You could see the sexual tension rising as they continued to deny their feelings for each other due to their situation. The fact they kept running away from each other (him especially) made the tension delicious and made the inevitable sex scene that much more satisfying. They were both strong capable people but I enjoyed the fact that Lauren was the more aggressive pursuer of their relationship. Honestly, it was drool-worthy!

This was a romance set in the most horrific of situations. I loved both the lead characters and truly wanted them to have a relationship. The side characters were fantastic and they kept the plot moving outside of the romance thread... I ignored life whilst reading this book because I really could not put it down! It was a sexy, fast-paced thriller of a novel and it gets two thumbs up from me!
