were “taking a trip to the ocean” she was not kidding. The bus is heading to the intertidal zone of the ocean. The lifeguard ran after the bus to safe the kids. Ms. Frizzle talks about the continental shelf. How it’s 4 to 6 hundred feet deep. The students learn about different kinds of fish, planktons and sharks. Next they head to the deep ocean floor but they didn’t stay long. They explored the coral reef. The bus then turned into a surfboard and the students ride it straight into the sand. Back at the classroom the students make a bulletin board about everything they had learned from the ocean. The students were glad it was the weekend for they need a break from the wild field trip.

I like this book because it has both fiction and nonfiction. The book has a lot of information in it. I learn a lot by reading the book like about jellyfish, squids, tiger sharks, plankton, and ocean currents. The book has pictures with great detail. I also like how at the end of the book there is a multiple-choice test on what is real life. For example, in real life a school bus cannot magically change into anything else.

I would use this book in any grade from 2nd to 6th and marvelous with science lessons. We would talk about the ocean salty water. The class could make waves like on page 16. We could do and activity on the food chain. We could talk about the kinds of coral reefs. The class could make charts showing what animals in the oceans are mammals. The ocean currents are also a great topic for discussion. We can have a lot of informational discussion with the Magic School Bus: on the Ocean Floor. My favorite part of this book was the bulletin board the class made back at classroom. I defiantly would like to make a class bulletin board about the ocean. I would also like to make a web quest to go along with the theme of this book.

I love the Magic School Bus books. This one would be a great one to use as in introduction or to activate prior knowledge in a science unit on the ocean. It is great because the book mixes together fiction and information. There is no student who cannot learn something from this book.

I think this would be great to introduce during a group. I think that there are many questions you could ask the students about the sea, and this could help introduce a science lesson! It would be fun to bring in a fish tank for the classroom.

The magic school bus books and episodes were very popular when I was growing up. I can remember wishing that I was a student in Ms. Frizzle’s class and got to go on all the cool fieldtrips like they did!

In the classroom I would also do a lesson where my students go to explore the ocean floor along with Ms. Frizzle by showing the episode that goes with this book. Then I would also have our classroom set up an aquarium that we have to take care of and keep a journal with documentation of the status of our aquarium.

learns about hot water vents, coral reefs, plant and animal life on the ocean floor, and the different levels of the ocean. I found this book so engaging and interesting because of how the book was organized and the variety of extra-textural features present throughout it. I think this book is so engaging (and others in the series, too) because it is set up with field trips that are unrealistic; yet, children become immersed in the book because they wish they could go on these field trips, but since they cannot they can read this book. I thought it was really neat how all the words present on each page were informative regarding the illustrations and content of the page. There was the main text, dialogue bubbles, posters, and on the sides of each page were students’ reports—all of which reflected the main topic of that specific page. The illustrations were superb; they had excessive detail and truly enhanced the story—especially with how they encompassed the children’s various reactions with what was happening. All of the extra-textural features were clear and to the point and I felt that they aided in understanding the ocean floor because they all provided interesting, specific details pertinent to the topic. The big idea of this book was how significant the ocean is and it is important to understand how it works so one can realize the importance of recycling and respecting our environment.

anyone who has seen the TV show, whether it was about this subject or not, would already be familiar with the characters, who were still well developed in this story. One of the reasons I liked this book was because of the character Ms. Frizzle; She is eccentric but very entertaining, and at one point in the story the children proclaimed "sometimes having a weird teacher isn't so bad!" I'm planning on becoming a teacher someday, and I'm proud to say that I'm not entirely "normal," so I was able to identify with Ms. Frizzle and I appreciated the fact that the students valued her unusual tendencies. Another reason I really liked this book was because of the illustrations. The story was told through a narrative text, but it was strongly supported by comments the students made in text boxes in the illustrations. Furthermore, a lot of the information about the Ocean Floor was presented in the form of "student written" reports on the sides of the pages. None of this information was essential to the development of the story, but it is all factual, and contains a great deal of information. The central message of this book is about protecting and valuing our oceans, and the various animal and plant life that is contained within.

the inter-tidal zone, all the way to the deep ocean floor. They were able to learn several new things firsthand about the ocean and were also able to understand that knew knowledge because they could see it face-to-face.
The first reason I liked this book was because it told many facts about the ocean, and its animals. Throughout the book, there were post-its, written by the students of the class in the book, answering any questions that they felt the reader should know. For example, when the class was on the deep ocean floor, Ms. Frizzle (the teacher) told the class that "There is not enough food here for large animals". On this page, there was a post-it from one of her students stating the question: "What do ocean-floor animals eat?", and then she gave an answer. I thought this added text feature helped engage the reader in learning as the students learned.
The second reason I liked this book was because at the end of the book, it had another text feature-a multiple choice quiz. As a reader, I was able to test myself to see if I actually read for understanding, and learned anything. The test gives three questions. I also thought it was funny how the "student" taking the test in the picture was a lifeguard.
The third reason I liked this book was because of the illustrations. The pictures were all around amazing, and the animals in this book were labelled. The people-and some animals- in the pictures were also able to talk with small talking bubbles. On one page, they were exploring sharks, and it was said that a whale shark are the biggest of all sharks. The illustration on this page showed the whale shark in a bigger proportion compared to the other sharks that looked very small. All in all, this was a great fictional, but fun informational book to read.
