Lovely rendering of Dolly Parton's autobiographical song about her childhood and the coat her mother made for her.Tie-in to The Hundred Dresses.

This story is a song written by Dolly Parton and is about a coat her mother made her when she was young. The coat was made from scraps of different materials because they were poor. However, Dolly loved her coat because her mother made it from love.

I love this book because it shows that there is
Show More
nothing wrong with being poor or having hand me downs.

I will pull this book out in the classroom when students are making fun of each others clothes or uncomfortable with their own clothes. I will also use this book when doing a section over recycling. It should show the students to make something out of something that might of thrown away before.

This story is actually based on a song written by Dolly Parton. It is about a coat her mother made her when she was young. The coat was made from scraps of different materials because they were poor. However, Dolly loved her coat because her mother made it from love.

I really liked this book because
Show More
even though it seemed like she had nothing she really had alot.

In the classroom, I would do a project over recycling. After reading this book it will make them see that they can make something out of nothing. Also, I will pull this book out in the classroom when students are making fun of each others clothes or uncomfortable with their own clothes.

This story was written by Dolly Parton about a coat that her mother made for her out of a box of rags. She wore her coat to school and got made fun of but she finally explained to the other students that she was proud of her coat that her mother made for her. Then all of her schoolmates realized
Show More
how special the coat really was.

I liked this book because it shows children that they are each special in their own way and they shouldn’t let anyone bring them down. I loved what she said about a person only being poor if they choose to be.

In the classroom, I would have the students take scratch pieces of paper and make something out of them using scissors and glue. We could then discuss the importance of realizing that there are less fortunate people in our world, but they are just as special as everyone else.

This book is about this little girl, and her family doesn’t have a lot of money. It is turning fall and the little girl doesn’t have a coat for the fall time and winter time. She remembers her mama having a box of rags that someone gave her, and her mama is going to put those to good use. Her
Show More
mama gets the nox of rags and begins to make her a coat, and every stitch haas love. Her jacket was made og many colors and she felt very rich in the coat. While her mama was making the coat, she told her the story of joshua and his coat of many colors. So, the little girl went to school, and she was sure all the kids would love her coat. She got to school and all of the kids laughed at her and she didn’t understand why. The little girl didn’t care though, because this is the one time she felt like a million bucks and it’s the best memory she has.

I can relate to this story because in the fourth grade I wore these jeans to school, and my friends laughed at me. I was so upset I just wanted to run away and go home. The jeans were totally in style back then, but I guess they didn’t think so.

In the classroom, the kids could color a worksheet of a coat and they could color it whatever colors they want to and have a coat of many colors. Also, we could maybe make our own classroom coat of many colors throughout the school year.

This book was about a young girl whose family was poor. Her mother decided to make her a coat out of some old rags they had. While she sewed the coat she told the little girl the story from the Bible about Joseph and his coat. She went to school and wore her coat proudly. Even when the other kids
Show More
made fun of her she didn’t care. She said “one is only poor if they choose to be” and she wore her coat all the time because she loved it.

This was a good book because it showed kids that whether you are poor or not, it doesn’t change who you are. You can be happy with money and without it. I liked the quote about only being poor if you choose to be. That’s a good way to look at it.

In the classroom, I would have an outline of a coat drawn on a piece of paper and I would give the kids square pieces of construction paper in different colors and let them make their own coat of many colors. Also, I would have the children bring in something that is handmade by someone in their family (or themselves) that is special to them and talk about why they love it. That would be a good way to show the kids that not everything worthy is bought in a store.

This book is a song that was written by Dolly. It is a true story from her childhood, and is her favorite song that she has ever written. This book is excellent for talking to kids about poverty and materialism. It can also open conversations about needs vs. wants. It even make a bible reference to
Show More
Joseph and his coat of many colors.

Summary:
In this book, the little girl doesn't have a coat. Her mom makes her a coat with a box of rags. The little girl loved her coat because her mom made it with love. When she went to school, all of the students made fun of her for her coat but she just smiled. Her family couldn't afford
Show More
anything more but what made her happy is that her mom made her a one of a kind coat just for her.

Personal Reaction:
This book is a great book. It shows children that even though they don't have a lot, they have more than others who don't have anything at all.

Classroom Extension:
1. I would have students make their own coat.
2. It's a great book to teach students that they don't have to be rich and how other people in the world don't have anything. It's a great discussion for how we can help others instead of bullying them.

This is a great book and it has a deeper meaning to it that really makes the reader think and be appreciative for their life. I mainly liked the meaning of this book. It showed a little girl who was financially poor and her family didn’t have much. But her mother made a coat for her with many
Show More
different color patches. She was so thankful and appreciative of this coat, even when the other kids made fun of her. The big idea and the meaning of this story is to appreciate what you have. My favorite quote from the book, and the most powerful, said, “One is only poor if they choose to be.” This book also pushes readers to think about life and what they should be thankful for, whether it is small or large. The character in this story was really great and she showed that there is more to life than materialistic things and money.

Personal Reaction:
Good book! I love the saying "You are only poor if you choose to be." I think this book can teach a good lesson.

Classroom Extension Ideas:

class to show the students that "you are only poor if you choose to be."

2) You could have the students make a craft, using construction paper and make a coat.

Summary:
This story is about a poor/low income family and a girl who had no coat to keep her warm. Her mother had a box of mismatched pieces of cloth. She created a coat out of this. Her Momma made this coat and told the little girl she blessed it and told her a story about Joseph. The little girl
Show More
was made fun of at school by her friends and peers. She still remained happy about her coat of many colors.

Personal Reaction:
Knowing the song that has been sung for many years, this book has surely sealed the feelings I ever had about it. I have always loved this song and now the book is one for my personal library.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. Exquisite pictures of family and of family settings. A good way to show a diverse or even non-diverse classroom that not all people have or currently live in a financially stable environment, but are still happy none-the-less.

2. Great way to do an art lesson. Have the students create multiple 4 by 4 in square paintings or color palate. Have them place them into a "coat" on the wall.

This is Dolly Parton's story of her coat of many colors. Her family was poor and Dolly had no coat. Dolly's mother takes a box of old rags and sews her a coat. Each rag was a different pattern and color, but when Dolly put on her coat she felt so loved. Her mother tells her that her coat is worth
Show More
more than gold because it was made with love. Dolly goes to school with her new coat and everyone makes fun of her, but she tells them her mother made it with love. She tries to make them understand that one is only poor if choose to be. This books teaches that having no money isn't necessarily the end of the world, family and love are just as important. I would recommend this book to grades k-3 and children will enjoy the rhyming scheme it has.

Winter is coming to Tennessee and there's no money to buy a new coat, so a little girl's mama sews one for her out of rags. The little girl wears it to school proudly, and when the other children laugh, she gives them a quick lesson about what it means to be rich.

The song kept running through my head the whole time I was reading it. Beautiful illustrations, although I was a bit surprised at how attractively poverty was depicted (especially contrasted with Dolly's descriptions of her childhood and pictures that I've seen over the years) - but of course,
Show More
there's a fine line to draw (see what I did there?) in a children's book.

This beautifully illustrated children's book is a part of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library--a fantastic resource for getting books into the hands of children and spreading literacy and the love of reading! This is a heartwarming children's story written by Dolly Parton herself and is
Show More
autobiographical. It is a tale from her childhood, when the family lived in poverty in rural Tennessee. Dolly's mother sewed her a coat made from colorful rag scraps and was filled with so much love and stories her mother told her as she sewed the coat. It was so beautiful in Dolly's eyes, and her heart was broken when she arrived at school and the children all made fun of her coat of rags. She could not make them understand what a beautiful coat it was, especially as it was full of so much love and stories. That heartbreak did not ease for her until many years later. This book comprises the lyrics of the song Dolly wrote about that incident and it is the most meaningful song to her that she ever wrote. What a wonderful, poignant, beautifully illustrated book to share with your child and read to them!
