"Rose Marshall died when she was sixteen years old and on her way to her high school prom. She hasn't been resting easy since then; Bobby Cross, the man who killed her, got away clean after running her off the road ... She's been looking for a way to stop him ... Series Info/Source: This is the third book in the Ghost Roads series. I got a copy of this book through NetGalley to review. This does tie in to the Incryptid series as well, so if you are reading that series make sure you read the most recent Incryptid book before reading this one.

Story (4/5):

This was well done and is a very transformative book in Rose's story. While I always love the intricacy and description in McGuire's stories, this one was a bit too wordy for me. The Ghost Roads stories have a lot of neat themes but also tend to wander more too. The main goal of this story is to finally have Rose eliminate Bobby Cross once and for all.

Characters (3/5): Rose is very alone and, although she interacts with other characters, she never really has many interactions with them. This makes the story feel a bit empty at times. We read a lot about Rose's feelings and thoughts on things and, like Rose herself, these tend to wander a bit off course sometimes. There are some interesting characters in here, they are just hard to engage with because they are kept at a distance.

Setting (4/5): The setting here is very creative. Rose journeys through not only the daylight (our world) and the twilight but also spends a lot more time in the starlight and midnight realms. While these layers of reality are a bit ambiguous and hard to follow at times, it is a very creative concept and I loved learning more about these different layers of reality.

Writing Style (4/5): McGuire’s writing is never as tight and driven for the Ghost Roads series as it is for her other series. There is just a lot of wandering thoughts in this story and it makes the story feel very slow. This is one of those books where you can literally skip a whole paragraph and not really miss anything that's actually happening. However, you will miss a lot of thinking and miss the feel of the story. It's a book that needs to be read with patience and deliberateness...I don't have a lot of either right now. I still enjoyed this but just felt like it could have used some editing to make it a bit tighter and faster paced.

My Summary (4/5): Overall I enjoyed this but didn't love it. I continue to enjoy Rose’s story and enjoy the concept of the different layers of reality. The story felt long; a lot of this story could have been omitted and the reader wouldn’t really be missing much. However, some of the thoughts of Rose during her journey are intriguing and thought-provoking. I just feel like with better pacing and a bit more editing this could have been spectacular. I do plan on continuing the series because I find it fascinating.

It never takes me long to finish a McGuire book, and this one went down quickly, even though I tried to make it last. Listening to Rose tell her story tied up a few strings. I love the snark, the philosophy, the world created, and just the constant surprise.

Excellent - a crossover from Incryptid. It surprised me, though it shouldn't have - the crossroads were always more important to Rose than to Annie. So what happened in That Ain't Witchcraft triggers some major moves for Rose. There's rather more about the structure of the twilight and other

places, a bit more about ghosts and the dead in general (including non-human, never-human dead - or at least, not currently alive...), a bit more about Rose and her friends (and acquaintances, and allies) in particular. Rose is offered choices, and has to consider her various loyalties and alliances - and the end result is several major changes for Rose and all who know her. Excellent story and will definitely be worth rereading in a while.

Catching up on a few series, I’d forgotten this had a third. As I noted in my comments on Sparrow Hill Road, this genre is outside my normal fare but I quite enjoyed this series and Ms. McGuire’s writing - “The living have colonized language so profoundly that we can’t get away from it,

even in death.” I might just have to check out her InCryptid series if I. An carve out some time.

Tidbit of interest maybe only to be: “That’s why I love Ohio. You can get a decent cheeseburger anywhere in America and almost anywhere in Canada, but there’s nowhere on the continent that does frozen custard the way Ohio does.” I just moved to Ohio a month ago (my wife grew up there); have to check this out

A great story with the always-awesome protagonist Rose Marshall, the ghost. I loved how this tied into recent events in the InCryptid series. The ending was great and I'm intrigued by what might be next for Rose.

I have very mixed feelings about this series -- on the one hand, it's Price-adjacent, and I love everything about that. Maguire's world of the dead is remarkable -- a fascinating place that truly weaves many traditions together into a whole, and Rose is such a good character. I've been rooting for

her from day 1, and I love where the Road takes her in this book. Very hard not to spoil -- it's super good!

On the other hand, I've always found the Ghost Roads series to be more repetitive, slower paced, less focused than some of Maguire's other series, and this book is no exception. I guess it makes sense that a ghost who is fixated on her murder and spending a lot of time in a purgatorial state would have that sort of narrative, but after a while I just wanted the plot to progress. When it does, boy does it, but be prepared for the road to be a long one as Rose makes up her mind.

I absolutely love the gradual unfolding of the repercussions from the ending of the Crossroads and I feel like this book is either the ending of Rose's story or the start of a whole new chapter. Really looking forward to where this goes next.

This book has Rose dealing with the death of the crossroads. Readers do not need to have read any of the Incryptid series, but it does flesh out how the death happened in That Ain’t Witchcraft. Rose is still being chased by Bobby and now that the crossroads is gone, she is going take care of him
Show More
once and for all. She doesn’t want to do it since she isn’t sure how it will work but with the protection of Persephone and the fate of her great niece in the balance, she will do what it takes to get rid of him. The book does finish Rose’s story arc but of course leaves the door open for more of her either with her own books or appearing in more of the Incryptid books.

I love this author's work but I did not love this book as much as I wanted to. It got really repetitive- I know this girl is dead, there is no need to tell me over and over. Also, I get cranky about writers who insert preachy sections about their opinions on currant issues. Even if I happen to

agree about gun control or homosexuality etc I do not appreciate it being inserted into my escapist literature.
There are a couple of brilliant parts of this story that raise it a level. I particularly enjoyed the ghost of petroleum emerging from the ghost gas station. The writing quality is uneven and parts of the book were downright irritating which is why it only gets 2 stars from me.
