This story gives facts about bats. It covers everything from what size they are, different kinds, and what they look like to how they delivery babies.

I learned a couple of new facts I did not know about bats. I liked the fact that the book has pictures to show what is being said instead of getting

dry information from an encyclopedia.

I would not read the story aloud, but I would use the facts in a bat unit.

Bats by Gail Gibbons is an insightful book about the various species of bats that exist. It provides great coverage on bats and comprehensive information that is easily interpreted and absorbed by readers of all ages. It even includes great drawings which highlight the features, behaviors, eating

habits, and basic facts about each type. At the end of the book, a glossary of terms and closer look at the bats discussed in the book is included to provide additional information that did not necessarily fit in with the flow of the book.
I was surprised at how much I loved reading this book. To be honest, as I was reading, I would look up and tell my mom about whatever the content was and how cool different aspects of the bats were (she was highly amused and kept trying to fight back bursting into laughter because of my giddiness). I felt like I was a kid again, even though I'm just shy of being 23. I think that the illustrations and writing matched superbly in Bats and Gail Gibbons's delivery of the content was equally as strong. She did not deal with getting so excruciatingly detailed with the imagery or information so as to make it feel encyclopedia-like. If anything, it was made for partner reading and as a basis for conversing and engaging with the text- just as I did with my mom. It is a great tool and approach when writing the book because it keeps the audience in mind. Younger children will have the opportunity to read the book and become amazed at the facts and have the chance to share it with other and the adults in their life with ease. It is approachable and not made up to be fanciful or to follow a certain narrative. It is straight forward and clean.
