We learn a lot more about this highly favorite secondary character from the Kate Daniels’ series and at least for this book, he’s paired up with Julie to
Expect a great deal of detailed action scenes. And wow, we’ve seen Julie mature, but what she’s doing now is really impressive.
Not only is this something series readers have been waiting for, but it’s a nice to read something new in the series while waiting for the next novel release.
It is in the Pack members’ reactions that we learn about Derek’s current reputation as a lone wolf and Cullen’s wolf. Julie uses her magical powers to track down the stone but they have lots of problems before they can get to it including murderous mermaids and an almost immortal hunter. Arrows coated with silver dust almost manage to kill Derek too.
I liked the relationship between Julie and Derek which would likely be a romance if only Julie were older. Derek is very aware that she is only sixteen to his twenty. Julie is a very street-wise sixteen and is learning to use her magic, getting her lessons from Roland, much to Derek’s dismay. Meanwhile, Derek is not doing what he should to keep his wolf in check and is in danger of losing control a few times during this story. It is a sign of their relationship that Julie is able to pull him back.
As always with Ilona Andrews stories, the dialog is snappy and the new monsters are both fascinating and creepy.
This is the first book in the Grey Wolf series. Derek is now a lone wolf and, when
This novella can be read as a stand alone, but it's nice if you have read the Kate Daniels books so you have some additional background on the characters.
There was a lot of magic, action, crazy creatures, and fun witty banter throughout this book. This novella packs in all the wonderful things I love about the Kate Daniels series but also lets the reader get to understand Derek and Julie a bit better.
Overall a very engaging and entertaining start to a new spin off series from the Kate Daniels world. I love Derek and Julie as characters so it was wonderful to learn more about them. I also really enjoyed all the action, magic, and crazy magical creatures. As with all of the Andrews books there is some excellent humor throughout as well. Highly recommended to fans of urban fantasy.
In this book, Derek tracks down the people responsible for murdering a young family in Pack territory. Soon, he and Julie are on the trail of three pieces of a magical stone and the evil warlock wanting them for some evil plan. I don't know how this writing team pulls it off, but each book turns out to be new and unique. The fight scenes are always great, the spells are new, the evil creatures are new (the ones that are supposed to be anyway). Even the fight scenes have new elements. You never know what to expect, which keeps me coming back for more!
This was a very satisfying read for being so short. Derek and Julie are going to be huge asset to Kate and a powerful force against the darker beings lurking in the magical Atlanta nights. Nicely done!
Short, but complete, with a fairly decent plot that felt a
I loved the dialogue between Derek and Julie - for me it was the best part of the book. The actual plot was a stretch but served as a nice passive-aggressive way of telling fans that yes, they do belong together, but she's still jail-bait so have some patience. ;-)
When a family he considers friends is murdered, Derek Gaunt takes it upon himself to hunt down the killers and make sure they can't hurt anyone else ever again. Julie Lennart, stubborn as ever, joins him in his quest for revenge.
Derek and Julie make a great team. Julie is growing up! There is the hint of a possible romance in the future. I never imagined who her mentor would be though it makes complete sense. This is a great set up for her own series. Hopefully both possibilities are explored in later books.
4.5 Stars
In this short novella set within the Kate Daniels world readers are treated to a rare glimpse into the thoughts and feelings of a secondary character, namely Curran's Wolf, Derek Gaunt.
The plot itself is pretty straightforward as Derek and Kate's adopted daughter, Julie,
The most intriguing elements, however, are those that make this novella essential to the ongoing story arc as some important details are provided alongside hints of things to come.
Overall, a well-written and enticing prologue to Derek and Julie's eventual spin-off series (one can hope!).
