Sarah Sundin has a new fan---me!!! I absolutely adored this book. It was humorous, romantic, sad, and filled with God through out the whole story. It even has a bit of a suspenseful twist to it, making this a book that immediately pulled me in.

I did not want to put this book done for anything! I
Show More
wanted to turn page after page until I got the very last one to find out what happened to Allie, Baxter and the lovable Walt Novak! Although, I must say, I was not fond of Baxter. He wasn't charming at all! But Allie and Walt and their friends, they all captured my heart, and helped me to over look the not so charming Baxter! I really loved the WWII era that Sundin used to create this story. I love WWII movies, so I knew this book wouldn't disappoint. I loved how Sundin was very detailed with the descriptions in this book.

Along with the wonderful characters that I mentioned above, Sarah Sundin also adds a wonderful, strong message of being honest. She shows that honesty is the most important factor in a friendship, or a romance for that matter! Between that message and God, this was a beautifully written, 5 star historical novel that will be permenantly on my shelf as the start of a great series collection! It has something for everyone, so grab a copy today, sit back and get ready for an adverturous flight back in time--you'll be glad you did! I can't wait for Wings of Glory #2--A Memory Between Us, due out September 2010!

Wonderful story that is full of romance and intrigue. This book is lengthy (over 400 pages) but I read it quickly and it didn't drag or slump anywhere. It was hard to put down and has a great message about truthfulness in it. I loved the characters, too. Highly recommend this one!

This was a fabulous love story, that I didn't think would pull me in like it did. I knew I would enjoy the story, who doesn't enjoy a good love story, but I had no idea I would care about the characters after reading it.
For a debut novel, Sarah has out done herself! I can't wait to read the second

and third novels. I am so eager to continue this story, and learn more about the characters.
This is one of those stories, where you think the couple will never get together, and then they finally do, and you want nothing but to keep reading.
A great tale, and even better movie in my head. Yeah I should mention, this would be a great book to adapt a film from. Notebook was a hit, and so should A Distant Melody!
On my recommendation list, FOR SURE!

My Synopsis:

A Distant Melody (Wings of Glory - Book 1) by Sarah Sundin

(For review from Revell- Blog Tour Dates March 14-20)

Allie Miller had her whole life planned out for her. She graduated from college with a business degree but her parents had bigger plans for her. She was to marry a man hand
Show More
picked by her father to succeed him as the owner and operator of his company, whether she loved him or not.

When Allie has a chance meeting with Walt, a young man about to go over sea's to fight in the war. Her life changes in ways she never thought possible. Allie must learn the hard way that obeying God isn't always easy. While Walt is learning about true honesty. Their letters to each other are a lifeline as they both struggle with their faith and with the expectations of their families and friends.

Will Allie marry Baxter and inherit the family company? Will Walt survive the dogfights above Germany to return home to his family? Will Walt and Allie find out what true love has in store for them?

My Thoughts:

Sarah Sundin does an excellent job with her debut novel, A Distant Melody. I really liked the author's allusion to music with the names of the characters, like Allegra and Cresenda. That was a really interesting touch.

Her characters were very honest and open and I found myself rooting for them. It actually reminded me somewhat of the wildly popular novel by Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook. Just that deep and resounding connection between Allie and Walt. It wasn't really love at first sight, but that spark was there and it grew until they realized they loved each other. Their friendship grew through letters which I think is really romantic. Long distance relationships could not have been easy during that time period, especially with the war going on.

I think this book was ultimately about finding out what God wants you do and not only knowing what it is, but doing something about it. It's about making those tough choices in life, that may not be what everyone else wants you to do, but it's what God wants you to do. That takes a deep and abiding faith as well as a lot of courage.

Definitely a great first effort from Sarah Sundin. Can't wait until the next one in the series comes out.

I give this one 5 out of 5 apples from my book bag!

This is one of the better whole novels that I have read in a while. This is a historical romance that has all of the elements that one's heart looks for and while at the same time bringing forth events of a war time past that are true and hard to accept. Usually I am not a fan of war time novels,
Show More
but this one captures my heart. In a similar manner as the films Pearl Harbor and Hanover Street except with a moral conscious. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the sequel A Memory Between Us come this fall.

It starts with the cover being pure dreamy that just makes your heart sigh. Then from page one I was in love with the character of Allie and soon after Walt. Watching how romance blossomed and watch the confusion of their hearts and yearning for explanation for the other was pleasantly painful. Each chapter brought me begging for me. Sarah Sundin wrote an incredible heart rending story and I highly recommend it. Sundin is now on my favorite authors list.

All her life, Allie Miller has been told by her mother that she is plain, and she will do anything to gain her mother's approval, even marrying a man she doesn't love. She begins to change though, and want more for herself, after meeting Lt. Walter Novak at her best friend's wedding, when their
Show More
love of music draws them together. The two begin exchanging letters in the summer of 1942, and the correspondence will change both of their lives. As their friendship grows though, secrets, commitments and the expectations of others threaten to keep them apart.

I really enjoyed this novel; it's my first time reading this author, but it won't be my last. I could really relate to the character of Allie, having always felt like an "ugly duckling" myself. I also liked how the story focused on Allie's relationships with her friends and family, and not just on the romance. The author really did a great job of using historical events and pop culture references of the World War II area to really give the story an authentic atmosphere.

This was a sweet story set during WWII. Walt and Allie were so adorable, and I enjoyed following their growing friendship and later, romance. However, there miscommunication in the last quarter of the book had me grinding my teeth together in frustration, and the reason why I didn't rate this book
Show More
4 stars.

I loved the descriptions of Allie's beautiful clothes and I admired her strength as she stood up to her parents and the choices they wanted her to make. In the 1940s, that would have been a hard thing to do. Her fiance, Baxter, was totally obnoxious and I was furious at how Allie's parents treated her when she finally broke her off engagement to him.

The detail the author put into the planes Walt flew was impressive. She had certainly done her homework and the combat scenes were exciting, especially the dog fights between the American and German pilots. The camaraderie that developed between Walt and the rest of his crew was also a touching aspect of the book, despite the fact they didn't respect him at the start.

Overall, an entertaining debut.

A Distant Melody, Sarah Sundin

who struggle with coming to terms with their own identities in Christ and the purpose and plan Christ has for their lives. They both struggle with the standards and expectations set before them by the world and their families of duty, honor and obedience, and success.
Allie Miller, spoiled heiress of Miller Ball Bearings; and Walter Novak, pilot and youngest son of a Preacher strike an unlikely friendship in the middle of WWII. Allie a new Christian, thanks to a mutual friend of Walt, is struggling with honoring her family through marriage to a man she does not love; While Walt struggles to meet the standards of his over-achieving brothers and the expectations of his family. The story involves many other characters and sub-stories that are woven in the main one. Throughout the story the reader sees the hand of God at work and the struggle against the flesh and spirit in the lives of the main characters. Allie must ultimately decide if she will forsake all else for the cause of Christ: leaving behind a sizable inheritance and the approval of her parents or go after whole-heartedly the will of God. Walt must decide that even small lies are of no good in the end - - and discover that truth does set the captives free. Both must embrace grace, and love and experience the power of true forgiveness.
Well-written and powerful. Readers will find themselves drawn into another world, experiencing the pain and turmoil of the war and hoping for the overcoming power of love. I enjoyed this book and hope to read more from this author.
