Great illustrations for art. It teaches not to tease because you never know when you might get attacked by an alligator. Good for grades 1-7

The irrepressible crew returns in this version of a traditional hand rhyme. The familiar chant tells of five foolish monkeys who are eaten when they tease a hungry crocodile. Christelow chooses a more lighthearted approach, illustrating it in sunny-colored pastels outlined in ink. She places the
Show More
rhyme in a picnic setting; while the mother dozes, the little monkeys scamper out on a limb and fearlessly call to a crocodile, "You can't catch me!" But the crocodile's jaws snap, and one by one the monkeys disappear. Bright patches of clothing and pairs of little eyes among the leaves will signal perceptive listeners that all is well. Children will enjoy being in on the secret that even the mother monkey, awakened by all the noise, doesn't know. In the upbeat ending, all the children pop out of their hiding places, safe and sound.

Five monkeys sit in a tree and a crocodile knocks them off by one. Younger readers can count one by one and this helps them count backwards. Children will enjoy the humor and fun drawings.

Most people know the one about monkeys jumping on the bed (also a book), but this rhyme is about as old. Surprised? Yeah, you're not alone :)

In the original, the monkeys are definitely eaten. In this version, not so much. (Also, this version cuts down some of my favorite lines from the original
Show More
rhyme.) Because the monkeys aren't eaten, people who are worried about more sensitive children will probably be okay with this book :) Bright illustrations, bouncy classic rhyme, cute story. Gotta love it :)

This is cute and fun, but the illustrations were pretty cluttered for the small pages of a board book. The scolding mama at the end was overly didactic for my taste. If a moral was required, I'd prefer to have seen the monkeys get eaten.

Summary: This book is about five little monkeys who go on a picnic with their mom. They all tease Mr. Crocodile and the crocodile snaps all of them out of the tree one at a time. When there are no more little monkeys sitting in the tree the mom gets worried. Suddenly, she spots five tails and all
Show More
her children are still in the tree. The mom scolds her children and they do not tease Mr. Crocodile again.

Personal reaction:
I enjoyed reading this book. It runs along the same line as "Five Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed". I also enjoy this book because you can sing it to the children.

Extension ideas:
I would have the children write about a time they went on a picnic with their family.
I would have the children write down three reasons why they should not tease a crocodile.

Five little monkeys decide to go tease Mr. Crocodile while their mother takes a nap. When their mother wakes up she thinks her babies got eaten by the crocodile, but really they are sitting in the tree hiding. Mother tells them it is not nice to tease. This is a great book to read when teaching
Show More
children about being nice to others, and its not polite to tease anyone.

Lacks the creativity of the original and just plays off the same idea.

Just like jumping in a bed but they are sitting in the tree. Its a great starter counter book for younger children but as children get older its a great way to start math facts of subtraction

This was a simple, yet enjoyable read aloud to share with a kindergarten class. They enjoyed making the SNAP sound for the crocodile and they were able to discern that the monkeys were not being eaten just by looking closely at the illustrations. The missing monkeys are semi-visible among the
Show More
foliage of the tree in the background. At least one student was able to spot that before I revealed it in each group that I read with.

The monkeys are at it again! But this time, they're climbing in a tree right above where an alligator swims. The kids enjoy this book, and also love singing the song afterwards. This story helps children count from five to zero, but more importantly, teaches them that teasing is not nice. The
Show More
illustrations are precious and simple.

When five little monkeys go down to the river with their mama for a picnic, the monkeys climb a tree and begin to tease a crocodile. SNAP! One by one, the monkeys begin to disappear.

Cute and colorful illustrations accompany this cute story that teaches children that it is not nice to tease.

Five monkeys and mama go for a picnic supper. Mama lays down for a nap and the monkeys climb in a tree to watch Mr. Crocodile. Five little monkeys sitting in a tree, tease Mr. Crocodile "cant catch me." Crocodile snatches up one monkey. Then its four little monkeys teasing Mr. Crocodile and he
Show More
snatches another. Before you know it there is only one monkey left in the tree and the crocodile snatches up the last monkey. Mama wakes up and says oh no there is no more monkeys sitting in the tree. Then she spots the five monkeys in another tree; she fuses the monkeys to not tease Mr. Crocodile because it's dangerous. Students will enjoy the rhyme scheme and the counting involved with this book. I recommend this book for a lesson about rhyming and for grades k-3. I also recommend incorporating the five little monkey puppets when reading this book.
