Quick & Dirty: The funny conversations and good tension in the story make up for some of its predictable plot points and the romance triangle continuing from Clarity.

Opening Sentence: I stepped forward with forced confidence.

The Review:

So Clare’s life at
Show More
Eastport has gotten a little easier. Since she caught a killer last summer, she’s stopped being the town’s psychic freak and turned into a hero. The popular girls–at least some of them–want to be her friends. But while not being bullied makes for a nice change of pace, being the center of attention is still uncomfortable for Clare. When Sara Waldman disappears, supposedly running away, Clare wonders if she should use her powers to find her or just leave well enough alone. She’s a fun (and funny) narrator to have, because she’s honest and up front about everything. Clare has no pretensions and is definitely the sort of girl I’d have been friends with.

Justin is fighting his newly regulated friend status, wanting to go back to the way they were before. Before he cheated on her with Tiffany, her biggest tormenter. While stepping in front of a bullet for her has definitely put him back on her good side, Clare’s not ready to let him back in. And then there’s Gabriel, the skeptic who may or may not be boyfriend material. I mean, it would be hard to date a guy who thought you were a fraud, but the hot factor, as well as the steamy looks, might just make up for it. Gabriel’s dad is one of Eastport’s finest, and with Sara Waldman missing his connections come in handy as Clare works to find what really happened.

What starts out as sweet notes quickly escalates to creepy emails and phone calls. Clare’s hunt for Sara Waldman goes slowly and when she finally starts looking for a stalker, the investigation goes nowhere. This is one of the plot lines I had a hard time investing in, if only because of Clare’s reaction to having a secret admirer. The fact is, there really isn’t much of one. And when the situation begins to escalate–to emails, pictures, and so on–she doesn’t tell anyone. Not her mom, who’s she’s worried will stop her from investigating Sara’s disappearance, or her brother, because he’s been acting like a total douche recently. The fact is, it was the one point in the story where I though Clare was out of character. Throughout the book she’s a smart heroine, even if she is swamped with cliché high school and boy problems. So why doesn’t she notice it’s actually really, really creepy?

This was a very classic young adult paranormal. While not exactly a bad thing, a lot of the high school experiences–bonfires, house parties–came off as cliché and contrived. The plot, however, does have a twist that I didn’t see coming. Though Clare’s new popular friends aren’t exactly the most engaging characters, I did come to like Mallory, Clare’s new, outcast friend. I loved the way their friendship developed and the dynamics it opened up. The conversations were funny and Harrington built some really great tension into the story–both romantic and scary. One thing I really did love was the Fern family, because they’re quirky and yet relatable at the same time, which is always a hard thing to do with characters that have supernatural powers. Overall, Perception was an easy read, and not a bad sequel. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book Harrington comes out with.

Notable Scene:

I clicked.

I hope you liked my flowers. You deserve to be lavished with gifts. Because you are unique. You are special.

Still anonymous.

I read it over three or four times. The note in my locker and the flowers had made my stomach do little flips over the unexpected flattery. But now I felt a bit nervous. The email was all complimentary. There was nothing threatening about it. But it didn’t seem right. I hemmed and hawed for a few minutes about whether or not to write back and finally decided to do it.

Thanks for the compliments, but I’m at the point now where I want to know who you are. Please tell me.

I hit SEND, and only a minute later, I got a mailbox error in return. The email address did not exist.

The Clarity Series:

1. Clarity

2. Perception

Perception follows Clare Fern in the aftermath of her first solved murder-mystery crime. She’s gone from mostly invisible/ocassionally picked-on girl to being doted on by many of the “popular” girls from school. Her two love interests, bad boy Gabriel and ex-boyfriend Justin, are still vying

for her attention. But Clare just wants to be left alone. And now a girl from school has gone missing and good-hearted Clare can’t help but get involved.

This novel was a good sequel to Clarity. It’s just as fun and cute as Clarity, but has an entirely different storyline, which I appreciate. Sometimes authors recycle the same old storyline, just with different murderers and victims, and call them sequels or even turn them into entire series. I liked that Perception had its own thing going on. We learn more about Perry, Clare, and the gang and it was a nice fluffy read.

I still stand by my comparison of this series to Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday. Perception, as well as Clarity, are fun supernatural murder mysteries that aren’t dark or scary but more Nancy Drew-esque.

Also, Team Nate FTW!

This is an amazing sequel! it had everything I wanted in the book and more. A great plot line, amazing characters and a stalker that makes your hair crawl.

What I loved most about this plot is the great plot line. With every turn of the page, you dive deeper in the life of Clare. I adored being in
Show More
her shoes and seeing how much her life has changed since then. The plot pacing in the book is so sweet! I loved the reading the book and really feeling like I was apart of it.Taking a walk in Clare shoes has never felt better.

The characters in this book have grown up so much! I loved that Clare is not naive but strong. Despite what she has gone through, her head remains high. I also adored how even minor characters play such a unique role in Clare's life.

Now the love interest! It's seem like I have been waiting for a long time to know this decision. Don't worry, I won't ruin it for you. But am I happy with who she chose? Definitely.

Overall, Perception is a ground breaking story that you will not forget. The psychological mysteries and thrillers in the book leave you gasping for air. A charming, entertaining sequel that will leave your mind blown, Perception gives an engaging read!

I gushed about CLARITY, the first book in this series, when it came out in 2011 because it was so obviously an homage to underappreciated Veronica Mars TV show. Both featured a socially ostracized but witty teen solving mysteries in her small affluent
Show More
town. It had style, great pacing, a dishy mystery, and subtle supernatural elements to boot. PERCEPTION, while not as strong as the debut, still delivers a decent wrap up to the series.

At it’s heart, the Clarity series is a mystery, and PERCEPTION kicks off right away with not one but three solid mysteries: a missing teen girl, a stalker, and a traumatized ghost trying to communicate with Clare’s brother Perry. All three mysteries are balanced well throughout the book, and Clare makes a few wrong conclusions while investigating that made her feel all the more real. I also appreciated that the ending was a big surprise on all fronts, but still fit perfectly will all the clues leading up to it.

Sadly, part of the magic that I loved so much in CLARITY was missing for me in PERCEPTION. Literally. Clare’s psychic touch ability was almost like an afterthought this time. It didn’t really play a significant role in the mysteries she was trying to solve. In fact, it could lift out entirely and barely affect the story. My other gripe was with the two love interests. They morphed into one character. They said the same suggestive things, flirted the same way, and basically acted the same way. There was zero tension/anticipation about who she would ultimately choose because I couldn’t tell them apart. It was a big disappointment on that front.

According to the author, there aren’t any more books planned for the Clarity series, but that she would love to write more and already has a few mysteries in mind for Clare. Most of the various plotlines—if not all the character arcs—are wrapped up in PERCEPTION, and it does feel like a satisfying ending for the series. Taken together, if you haven’t given these books a read yet, you’re missing out on a couple fun, fast reads and a truly memorable protagonist. Veronica Mars fans especially should run, not walk, to the nearest bookstore.

I didn't realize this book was part of a series until I started reading it. The author was very good about filling in a new reader so that he/she didn't feel left out of the back story. While I felt that parts of this book moved too slowly, I still really liked it. I didn't figure out the twist

until the author revealed it, which made me really happy. I definitely recommend this book.

Clare Fern is gifted and, last summer, her gift almost got her killed when she used it to help find a murderer. She, like her mom and her older brother, has paranormal abilities. She is able to touch an object that someone else has touched and know what they were seeing or feeling when they touched
Show More
it. Her visions are reliable but sometimes her interpretations are not. When a secret admirer begins to send her anonymous notes and presents, she is flattered. She is sure her outgoing, fun-loving, ex-boyfriend, Justin, or Gabriel, the strikingly handsome, son of the police chief and amateur detective, are competing for her attention. They both admit to the competition but neither sent her the notes and photos. Adding to the romantic complications, she is struggling to find a real friend amidst her newfound popularity. Proving her abilities solving last year’s mystery has made her a celebrity at school and it seems almost everyone wants to be her friend. When a senior at her school is missing, Clare is drawn toward the investigation and adds another layer of complication. It’s up to Clare to sort everything out. She will need to choose between Justin and Gabriel, differentiate between false and real friends, and help find out what happened to her missing schoolmate while protecting herself from a potentially dangerous “admirer.”

As a second novel about Clarity Fern and her unique abilities, this one can easily stand on its own. The characters are complex and interesting. Clarity understands what it means to be an outcast and what it means to shut people out. The plot is fast-paced, suspenseful and realistic. Clare’s gift is an unreliable skill for solving crimes and often confuses her investigations rather than helps them. Readers will enjoy the classic mystery presented with a twist. The romantic entanglements are there, the suspense is there and, most importantly, the solution is there for the reader to discover. Add to that the teen angst when searching for acceptance and friendship and the novel is a good choice for young adult readers. I recommend it as good crossover addition to the genres of paranormal fiction and mystery. Grades 7-12.

Reading Perception reminded me of how much I enjoyed Clarity. It was so great to be thrown back into Clare’s world in Eastport, MA.

Perception picks up after the events of Clarity. Clare and the Fern family are still dealing with the aftermath of what occurred over the summer, which means an
Show More
increase in popularity for Clare and trouble for her brother Perry. Before long, trouble once again rears its head in Eastport with the disappearance of a local girl followed by Clare getting messages from a secret admirer making Clare want to use her gift to try to solve these mysterious

I really liked that Kim Harrington did not just dismiss the events of the prior book, but continued to build off what happened and continue to affect the characters. Clare wants to use her gift to help find this missing girl but her near brush with death in book one makes her mother prevent her from doing that. But Clare is still curious and manages to still try and help anyways.

I loved the mystery in this book. A simple, yet believable situation had Clare and the reader working to the end to uncover the culprit. I really liked how everything tied together in the end and how all the little mysteries popping up were all connected.

The battle of the boys, Gabriel and Jason, continues in this book more. In Clarity, I wasn’t sure who I liked more out of the two boys, but Perception allowed room for more growth with both these characters and Gabriel came out as my favorite of the two (I mean he plays hockey!). While the romance isn’t the main focus of the book, it was woven in with the main action and did not feel forced. And this was not a love triangle that was annoying either. Clare is genuinely confused about her feelings for these boys and wants both in her life, but not sure whom she would prefer to be more than friends with. In the end, I felt Clare definitely made the right choice with the guy she picked.

Perception allowed a lot of room for Clare to grow as a character. So much has happened to her between these two books and she had to have changed because of the events that occurred. Clare became a stronger person, not afraid to be who she was and let people into her life instead of staying on the fringes. She’s no longer just the freak with special powers, but an actual person and she is able to see how important she is too.

Perception is the perfect quick summer read. Kim Harrington’s style is funny and sarcastic and she knows how to write a great mystery. I really enjoyed this sequel and it reminded me why I loved the first one so much. I’m so glad I finally got around to read this. I can’t wait to see what Kim Harrington writes next!

And side-note: how perfect is this cover? I love it. Makes so much sense with the book too. And this Clare is much more how I pictured her then the one on the original Clarity cover.

GoodReads Synopsis: When you can see things others can't, what do you do when someone's watching you?

Everybody knows about Clarity "Clare" Fern. She's the psychic girl in school, the one who can place her hands on something and see hidden visions from the past.

Only Clare would rather not be a
Show More
celebrity. She prefers hanging back, observing. Her gift is not a game to her.

But then someone starts playing with her head . . . and heart. Messages and gifts from a secret admirer crop up everywhere Clare turns. Could they be from Gabriel, the gorgeous boy who gets Clare's pulse racing? Or from Justin, Clare's hopeful ex-boyfriend who'd do anything to win her back?

One thing is certain. Clare needs to solve this mystery, and soon. Because the messages are becoming sinister, and a girl in town has suddenly disappeared

My Thoughts: I love this series! It’s not a traditional mystery, it’s way more fun!

In this installment we have some common threads from the previous book, Clarity, that weave through this one. I love the subplots that continue in the background, they keep me coming back for more…kind of makes me feel like I’m part of the family.

Since “Clarity” took place during the Summer, Perception starts out shortly thereafter and Clare is in school. In previous years Clare has been perceived as an “odd ball”, but after helping to solve the murder from the Summer, the “cool” kids are paying her more attention. Clare also seems to have a secret admirer/stalker. Add to this the fact that a Senior has gone missing and Clare’s got a lot on her plate.

Maybe I was a bit slow reading Perception, but I didn’t figure it out until just before Clare did…that doesn’t happen to me very often. I find this series to be so much fun. Lots of twists and turns, very likeable, flawed, HUMAN characters, some with extraordinary gifts, all of them with great personal stories. I sincerely hope Harrington can find the creativity needed to keep this series going for a long time to come.

Highly Recommended

This is the second book in the Clarity series. Hopefully there will be more! Clare can see into the past and it is a pretty handy skill in solving crimes. Clare is beginning to realize that she wants to use her gift for helping people instead of just catering to tourists through
Show More
her family business. The first book left readers wondering if she was going to go back to her ex-boyfriend, Justin or start dating Gabriel. Gabriel is new in town, he’s super hot and his dad is the new chief of police. We get some more insight into Gabriel’s past that makes readers like him even more. He understands Clare better than most of her other friends and there is a lot of foreshadowing as to who she will pick to be her boyfriend.
Clare is becoming close to a girl named Mallory. This is her first real friend at school since she has been shunned before because of her gift. Everyone always thought she was just the weird girl. Because she is beautiful, smart and can see the past – she becomes a target of a stalker. It started off with some small romantic gestures, so she assumed it was Justin or Gabriel, but then it quickly turned into scary stalking. This is the mystery that needs to be solved!
I am definitely hooked on the two Clarity books. I love the characters, the suspense, the mystery, romance and elements of paranormal powers. It’s a fast-paced entertaining read. The setting is a small New England town. Clarity lives in a Victorian mansion and it really fits her and the mood of the book. I love everything about it ☺ I’m not sure that the maturity of the characters makes it suitable for 7th and 8th graders, but it’s perfect for high school readers. There is no explicit sex or drug use. But people die and there is some hard-core stalking and kidnapping going on. It’s a good addition for a school library. I’ve been recommending it to readers who I know like mystery and paranormal stories. It would be a good book club read. Maybe it would fit into a contemporary literature class, where students read current YA books. Librarians could design fun book displays based on the theme of these stories.

I love this series. The characters are well developed and realistic. Clarity is obviously at the center of the story, but she has a very strong supporting cast, along with periphal characters to give the story depth. Despite the "gifts" that Clarity and her family possess, this book is still a
Show More
classic mystery.

I appreciated the candor of this book. Clarity is not a trained detective and is still young, which translates in her actions and thoughts. She makes some classic mistakes of logic while trying to solve the mysteries piling up around her. Hence the the title of the book. Perception is everything; but Clarity finds out that perception is often dangerous and misleading.

I was also very pleased with her decisions concerning various relationships. I know I'm not supposed to want a certain person to be picked, liked, etc. But I do and I did:)
